The archetypal Farmer is known for the work he or she does with soil and seeds. Metaphorically people often think of ‘growth’ as the symbolic meaning of our inner Farmer, which is all true. But this archetype is more than that.

Your inner Farmer is a master of time. Not just the clockwork, the linear time of Chronos. But also the sacred, opportune moment, we know as Kairos time. The Farmer knows when to plant, when to wait, and when to harvest. Not just by the calendar, but by the whispers of the earth and the rhythm of the seasons.

So…

Do you sometimes feel trapped between your daily (mandatory) routines and the desire for spontaneity? Or are you just that free bird, who could use a little more structure? Connect with your own inner Farmer and discover what he or she has to tell you.

Chronos: The Farmer’s Plan

The basis for your inner Farmer is Chronos, the structured, predictable time. It determines the Farmer’s almanac with his or her list of activities that need to be done, the planting schedule, the harvest calendar. In short, your ‘Farmer’s Plan’. This can be your to-do list for the week, or your business plan.

This side of your inner Farmer supports you in the discipline of rising at sunrise. Helps you in the routine of taking care of the fields. And the patience of waiting for seeds to sprout. Chronos gives the Farmer a framework, a sense of order and control. Without that, chaos would reign, and nothing would grow and therefore nothing would come out of your hands.

Kairos: The Farmer’s Intuition

But the Farmer also knows Kairos. The right moment, the divine timing. Kairos is the unexpected rain that calls for a change in plans. It’s the intuition that today is the day to harvest, or the feeling that the soil is finally ready for new seeds. Kairos is the Farmer’s connection to the land, to nature’s subtle signals, and to the deeper wisdom that transcends schedules and spreadsheets.

These Kairos side of your inner Farmer offers you the space for spontaneity in your life. So you can really enjoy that first day of spring and spontaneously go out for a drink. By also connecting with this side of this archetype, you prevent your life from being determined by your agenda.

The Balance

The magic of the Farmer lies in balancing these two time units. Too much Chronos, and the Farmer becomes rigid, only living according to plan and agenda and therefor missing the signs that the earth is ready or that the weather is shifting.

Too much Kairos, and the Farmer risks chaos, planting too late or harvesting too soon. The Farmer’s art is to hold both: to plan with Chronos and to trust Kairos.

This also applies to your life. If you don’t have a clear plan and connect activities to it, you will be swallowed up by the delusion of the day. You often experience stress and busyness, because there is a lot on your plate. You find it difficult to choose what to prioritize, due to a lack of direction or purpose in your life or in your work.

If you plan your agenda too much according to a tight schedule set in advance, you will also experience stress and pressure. There is no room for spontaneity. If something happens that requires extra attention, your planning will immediately go haywire.

Your own inner Farmer

Archetypes are not just roles you play. They are energies you embody. The more you recognize those energies, the easier it is for you to balance your lives. The Farmer archetype invites you to cultivate not just crops, in other words said: not only try to achieve your goals. Your Farmer invites you to live in the here-and-now, to actually live your own life. Balancing structure with spontaneity, discipline with intuition, and planning with mindful presence.

Archetype FarmerThe Farmer’s Dance in Your Daily Life

Imagine your daily life as a field you tend each day. Your calendar, to-do lists, and (mandatory) routines… Those are your activities in Chronos’ time. The structured plan that keeps your world turning and shows the direction to go. It’s the alarm that wakes you. The meetings that fill your day and the deadlines that keep you on track. Without Chronos, life would feel chaotic, like a garden overrun with weeds.

But here’s the twist…

Just as a Farmer can’t force a seed to sprout before its time, you can’t force creativity, inspiration, nor connection to bloom on command. That’s where Kairos comes in. The art of recognizing the right moment. It’s the sudden flash of inspiration during a shower. The unexpected conversation that sparks a new idea. Or the quiet voice inside that says, “Now is the time to rest,” even if your schedule screams otherwise.

Meet your inner Farmer

So, how do you recognize your inner Farmer? Start by noticing the tension between your need for control and your craving for spontaneity. Do you ever feel guilty for deviating from your plan, even when your gut tells you it’s the right thing to do? Or do you resist structure altogether, only to feel scattered and overwhelmed? Your inner Farmer is the voice that whispers:

“There’s a time for planning, and a time for trusting your intuition to determine the right moment.”

The real magic happens when you let Chronos and Kairos dance together. Plan your day, but leave room for the unexpected. Set goals, but stay open to detours.

Just as a Farmer knows when to stick to the planting schedule and when to adapt to the weather, you, too, can learn to dance between structure and flow. The result? A life that feels both productive and alive. You’re not just crossing tasks off a list, but also savouring the moments that make life rich.

When you embrace this balance, you’ll find yourself less stressed, more creative, and deeply connected to the rhythm of your own life. Your inner Farmer supports you in this. It’s about cultivating a life that’s both rooted and free.

Fantastic Friday Sessions

Every last Friday of the month I organize an online Fantastic Friday Session. These sessions take you on an archetypal journey. Each time we dive into an different archetype. This month we focus on the inner Farmer.

Why do I organize these sessions?

Your subconscious undercurrent influences your decisions, the choices you make, how you feel and your behaviour, for example. The more you are aware of what is happening in you on a subconscious level,

  • the more you are connected to your own inner wisdom
  • the less change you make decisions you regret later,
  • the more you are able to make choices that are both good for you ánd the world around you
  • the more you are aware of what you do (or don’t) and why you do that

Your inner archetypes are a big part of your subconscious undercuurent. The Fantastic Friday Sessions are a light and playful manner to meet your archetypes. And that helps to dive into the depths and the richness of your own inner wisdom.

Curious? Join us! This month we focus on your inner Farmer. What should be nourished in you? You get to know the role of the Farmer in yourself and how to recognize him or her. And we explore its added value in your daily life.
