The Moon archetype is one of the most recognizable and at the same time an unknown archetype in terms of meaning. It stands for our intuition, our cycles in life and our visibility. What from us needs to ripen in the dark and is only ready to be shown later?

In times of uncertainty and change – personal, organizational and worldwide – the Moon archetype invites us to slow down, to listen and be successful in a different way than we normally try to be. Not by forcing, or dominating, but by sensing what is the right moment to act and the right thing to do.

In this blog I explore the Moon archetype, because our inner Moon helps us to be a bright spot in dark times.

The archetype Moon as a pattern of the inner life

Balanced Story Archetype card MoonCarl Gustav Jung describes archetypes as patterns of the soul. Universal patterns that color our behavior and the stories we tell about situations in our lives.

The archetype Moon is a pattern about making visible what is still hidden insight us. This is also reflected in mythologies worldwide. Moon goddesses such as Selene, Artemis and Isis guard the night, the transitions, the secrets. They stand at the gate between what is visible and what still needs to take shape.

Visibility & Fertility

Jung therefore saw the archetype Moon as the bearer of the anima principle: the inner feminine, present in every person, regardless of gender. The archetype connects us with our feelings, the imagination and with our intuition. It is about fertility: not only literally, but especially figuratively. Are you fruitful in your plans? In your decisions? In how you lead or coach?

Its ‘counterpart’ is of course the Sun, which symbolizes the outward growth and success. Where the Moon manifests the feminine in us, the Sun brings out the masculine in us. Too much sun? Then what you are doing scorches and burns. Too much Moon? Then what you are doing in the dark remains invisible to others and therefore infertile. Because yes, too much moon means that you withdraw too much into yourself (new moon phase) and then you are invisible to the outside world.

On the one hand, the Moon invites you to examine whether what you are doing is truly fruitful – for you, for others and for the greater whole. On the other hand, the Moon asks you to develop what is still invisible in you and to put it in the full light.

The Moon shows who you are when no one is looking. And she reminds you that everything has its own phase: arising, growing, blooming and letting go.

The Moon in behavior: soft, cyclical and connecting

If the Moon archetype is dominant in yourself or in others, you don’t think nor act in a linear way, but in a circular way. You know that ideas sometimes still need to stay in the dark to ripen. And you feel or sense exactly when something is there to step into the light– and when it is not ready yet. The hard part with living by your moon cycle, is that our (Western) world hardly values the “dark times of riping”. We more value the Sun-activities. As a result people often neglect their archetypal Moon signals and therefor make decisions or do thing they later regret.

Maanfasen zijn een metafoor voor jouw innerlijke ontwikkelingIn the archetypal work, we distinguish between archetypes, which focus on “Being” (feminine) and archetypes that stimulate our “Doing” (masculine). Our inner Moon falls into the first category. The archetypal Sun in the second. You need both to be in balance.

The Moon asks us to Be. Changes aren’t always necessary and certainly cannot always be forced. They sometimes just must grow slowly. It’s about carrying the process. Anyone who works with archetypes knows: some archetypes do not require action, but attention. The Moon archetype is such an archetype. She whispers rather than shouts. She invites you to slow down, to tune in, to live in rhythm.

In a time when visibility, growth and result-orientation are central, the Moon reminds us of another form of success: inner success.

In behavior, you recognize the Moon in people who:

  • want to feel first before deciding
  • are sensitive to atmosphere, timing and context
  • like to give meaning to experiences
  • create peace and safety for others

In teams, these are often the people who sense the undercurrent. Not always the loudest heard, but often crucial for real coherence in the team.

The light characteristics of the Moon: living based on your Inner-Knowing

Full Moon - archetypically step into the lightIn its light (as in ‘possitive’) form, the Moon is a source of deep wisdom. The Moon helps us to realize that not everything has to be solved immediately. Sometimes it is better to take a step back, stand still and understand and feel things before you make a decision.

In this era of speed and performance, the wisdom of our inner Moon sometimes disappears into the background. And that’s a shame, because this often leads to wrong decisions.

When the Light Positive Moon is active in you:

    • you trust your intuition without having to prove it
    • you recognize that growth takes time and sometimes requires standing still
    • you radiate your peace and bedding
    • you dare to dream without immediately knowing how to make that dream come true
    • you work in a process-oriented and coordinated way
    • you work from meaning instead of pressure

In organizations, you see this reflected in leaders who create safety, in coaches who do not fill in but follow. Professionals who value timing over speed. They know the power of being present. Not directing, but guiding. Don’t push, but carry. Holding Space.

This is about feminine success, measured by feminine values such as cohesion, care for the whole and sustainability.

The shadow of the Moon: disappearing in the dark

Shadow side of the archetypal MoonBut just like all archetypes, the Moon also has its shadow side. When we stay too much in the interior, without embodiment, we become invisible. We then live in the dark and withdraw from life.

For a while, that’s not a problem. That is part of the cycles of the Moon, but if you stay turned inwards for too long, you get stuck. In teams or organizations, we call this “too much navel gazing”. Customers then walk away and results lag behind.

The shadow moon shows itself when:

  • you get stuck in reflection, without taking steps
  • you don’t look at your own shadow / dare to look at it
  • your dreams are separate from your actions
  • feelings become all-important
  • you avoid visibility
  • you are not fully exploiting your potential

A part of you then remains invisible, and thus becomes infertile.  Then the dark (your inner New Moon) does not become a place of ripening, but of avoidance.

Do you recognize this? Then the invitation of your inner Moon is not to do more introspection, but to become visible step by step. Exactly where your tension and mayby even fear is… Step into that light! What if you are successfull?

Meeting your inner Moon

If you not only want to understand the Moon, but also meet it yourself, then do the following intuitive, narrative exercise in which you go step by step through the different phases of your inner Moon:

  • New moon – what is still dark?
  • Waxing moon – what wants to grow?
  • Half moon – what requires balance?
  • Full moon – what should be visible?

The exercise takes about 20–25 minutes and requires nothing but paper, pen, and a willingness to listen.

Think of it as an encounter with an old, wise voice within yourself. Click here to go to the exercise.

Fantastic Friday session on The archetype Moon: a Light in the Darkness

If you not only want to understand the Moon archetype, but also experience it yourself, then join the Fantastic Friday Session and discover how you can bring light in dark times.

The next Fantastic Friday session on the Moon archetype on January 30, 2026. It is an accessible and at the same time in-depth introduction to this archetype. In an hour and a half you make contact with your inner Moon individually and in groups. You experience its meaning in your life and you get language for what is often still wordless.
