Carl Gustav Jung describes archetypes as patterns of the soul. Universal patterns that color our behavior and the stories we tell about situations in our lives.
The archetype Moon is a pattern about making visible what is still hidden insight us. This is also reflected in mythologies worldwide. Moon goddesses such as Selene, Artemis and Isis guard the night, the transitions, the secrets. They stand at the gate between what is visible and what still needs to take shape.
Visibility & Fertility
Jung therefore saw the archetype Moon as the bearer of the anima principle: the inner feminine, present in every person, regardless of gender. The archetype connects us with our feelings, the imagination and with our intuition. It is about fertility: not only literally, but especially figuratively. Are you fruitful in your plans? In your decisions? In how you lead or coach?
Its ‘counterpart’ is of course the Sun, which symbolizes the outward growth and success. Where the Moon manifests the feminine in us, the Sun brings out the masculine in us. Too much sun? Then what you are doing scorches and burns. Too much Moon? Then what you are doing in the dark remains invisible to others and therefore infertile. Because yes, too much moon means that you withdraw too much into yourself (new moon phase) and then you are invisible to the outside world.
On the one hand, the Moon invites you to examine whether what you are doing is truly fruitful – for you, for others and for the greater whole. On the other hand, the Moon asks you to develop what is still invisible in you and to put it in the full light.
The Moon shows who you are when no one is looking. And she reminds you that everything has its own phase: arising, growing, blooming and letting go.
